Australian media has reported that, Sri Lankan cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilaka, who was arrested in Australia, will be taken to Silverwater Prison in Sydney tonight.
Sri Lankan batsman Dhanushka Gunathilaka was arrested by the Australian Police yesterday (06) around 01 am in relation to a complaint filed by a 29-year-old girl resident of Rose Bay, East of Sydney, regarding a sexual assault.
The girl filed a complaint alleging that she met Dhanushka Gunathilaka through an online dating app and that he sexually assaulted her at her Rose Bay home.
The New South Wales State Police, which is conducting investigations into the incident, stated that the complainant has also alleged that the suspect, Dhanushka Gunathilaka, assaulted her on several occasions.
Dhanushka Gunathilaka, who was detained in a Sydney detention center, was presented to the Downing Center Regional Court for the second time today via video technology by Sydney City Police.
When the case was called before Downing Center District Court Magistrate Robert William, Dhanushka’s lawyer, Mr. Ananda Amarnath, requested bail on his behalf.
However, the magistrate has refused to grant Dhanushka bail because the Australian government’s sex crime laws have recently been tightened and the suspect is a foreigner.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has decided to ban Dhanushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.
